Week 272 panic regarding the Oregon coast coho run on the South Umpqua river

It was announced at a gathering of restoration professionals that the South Umpqua river has zero recorded spawning activity this year. Of more concern was the fact that next year; the one in which we experienced the Omega Heat Dome event will give us a similar picture. No spawning redds in the designated spawning survey areas. Is it over?

The Atlantic Salmon of North Eastern USA was on the verge of extirpation. Listed and Endangered under the Endangered Species Act strident efforts are being made to restore the iconic species. Dams on rivers are being removed to provide over a thousand miles of habitat. More needs to be done. 90% of it historical habitat is no longer available to the fish. Nevertheless the species is responding to our nation's efforts toward recovery.
